Geetex

ABOUT US

Geetex has a long and illustrious history dating all the way back to 1890 when the late Mr Rupchand Mohinani left Karachi (Sindh in Pakistan) for the prospects of Sumatra, then a part of the Dutch East Indies. Starting a humble textile business in the city of Aceh, he found simple success. Aceh was an important fuelling port back in the days where coal was widely used by ships. As ships began to use diesel, coal ships lost their importance, and likewise, so did the city of Aceh.

With that, Mr Rupchand took the initiative and moved his business to Medan, thoughtfully expanding his business with the addition of his sons. With the arrival of the Second World War, trade came to halt, motivating Mr Rupchand to return to Karachi, (Sindh in Pakistan) leaving his business to his sons.

After the war, his eldest son, Ghanshamdas, resumed the trade with two of his brothers. Business boomed as the world recovered from the war. They expanded the textile business from retailing into wholesaling, setting up several stores to handle the new influx of business.

As Indonesia began fighting for its independence, stability seemed a distant dream. Motivated by the turmoil, Mr Ghanshamdas left Medan for Hong Kong in 1960, founding Geetex Enterprises (HK) Ltd. The company was set up to cater to the booming textile and garment industry at the time. He foresaw further growth and set up Geetex (Japan) Ltd in the 1972 and Geetex Enterprises (Singapore) Pte Ltd later on, delegating management of the various offices to his four sons, who to this day are still managing the organization jointly.

Over the years, Geetex has evolved from a textile based company to consumer electronics, photographic equipment and food products. Geetex currently has trading partners in the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Europe as well as Africa. Most recently, the third generation has become actively involved in the business and are looking forward today to further expansion and welcoming new business proposals.
